LESHC Takes the Cake - A Star is Born!

image
From the inception of a seemingly tiny bill written by past LESHC Board President Jim Rapp, carefully nurtured and tracked by Jim, Somerset County Tourism, Director Julie Widdowson and her staff, and the LESHC office, a star has been born. You may have seen it whoosh and explode across Maryland over the last few months. You surely have savored its' sweet taste as it collided with your taste buds, vowing to have just only one more bite. What is this star of which I speak, still giving off bright sparks and sizzle over Maryland's Eastern Shore? Smith Island Cake - Maryland's new Official State Dessert.

Bill 315 Signed by Governor O'Malley
After months of putting the ingredients together of countless letters of support inundating the LESHC office, emails, phone calls, countless hours of dedicated volunteers lobbying, the support of the politicians, endless interviews, public appearances, finally the icing on the cake - watching history in the making - the signing of Bill 315 by Governor Martin O'Malley. Although Bill 315 designating Smith Island Cake as the State Dessert didn't' take effect officially until October 1, 2008, the celebration had already begun with much rejoicing and cake baking.

imageStar Quality
Our little "star" on the surface appears unassuming and quiet. But the inner qualities have shone forth like a superstar for the people of Smith Island, bringing forth a collective community effort of renew growth and hope to this so very important centuries old heritage area of Maryland' Eastern Shore. Already markers have been dedicated and in place to mark kayaking water trails and plans are being developed now for walking trails on the Island through possible grant funding from State Highways Association (SHA).

The LESHC would like to thank the countless individuals, who have spent many hours promoting Smith Island Cake as Maryland's State Dessert in order to help preserve this special community of Smith Island.
