Hiking & Walking

This area is blessed with natural beauty, proud cultural heritage and gracious people. To walk among its forest trails, gentle shorelines and historic streets is a rewarding outdoor experience.

Pemberton Historical Park (Salisbury) is a 225 acre public facility which encompasses over two centuries of growth and development of the land we know as Wicomico. It is located on the western bank of the Wicomico River and is the site where Isaac Handy arrived and built his home and working plantation. Pemberton Historical Park offers a 4.5 mile trail providing public access to 5 distinct ecosystems. Interpretive nature programs are offered for groups of all ages and interests.

There are guided walks available at the state parks where a naturalist will point out natural habitat and ecology. Wildlife management areas are open to the public, but are rarely used. There are also wonderful nature trails in many small towns, such as Cypress Park in Pocomoke City where there is a unique interpretive wooden boardwalk that traverses a bald cypress swamp.

Snow Hill has several parks bordering the silent Pocomoke River. Visit the historic district of Salisbury known as "Newtown" and stop by historic Poplar Hill Mansion. Take the free river ferry and visit Whitehaven, a small historic village tucked up against the Wicomico River. Walk its streets and let your mind wander among the ghosts of three centuries of continuous occupation.

Wildlife Management areas are all open to hiking. At Furnace Town the casual walker has a chance to experience nature, wildlife, history, all in one visit. Located in the heart of the Pocomoke Forest on the banks of the beautiful Nassawango Creek, the area is an educational site of local archaeological and historic interest. The area also supports river otters and over 14 species of orchids and 18 species of warblers.

Berlin, Ocean City, Snow Hill, and Princess Anne all have self-guided walking tours of their historic districts. In Berlin, rent a headset at the Globe Theater and take a one-hour walking tour highlighting the towns architecture and history. Crisfield offers a guided tour visiting the old ferry boat dock, a crab picking house and where the old "bawdy houses" of the 1890s used to entertain, when the town was known as the Dodge City of the East.
